Microwave Cleaning Tips

Cleaning your microwave doesn't have to be a chore! Here are some effective tips, often using natural ingredients you likely already have:

The Steaming Method (Most Popular and Effective)

This method uses steam to loosen caked-on food and grime, making it easy to wipe away.

  • With Vinegar:

    1. Fill a microwave-safe bowl with 1 cup of water and 1 tablespoon of white vinegar.
    2. Place the bowl in the microwave and heat on high for 2-5 minutes, or until the water boils and the microwave fills with steam.
    3. Crucially, leave the door closed for another 5 minutes (or even 10 minutes for very dirty microwaves) to allow the steam to continue working.
    4. Carefully remove the hot bowl.
    5. Wipe down the interior (walls, ceiling, floor, door) with a damp cloth or sponge. The loosened grime should come off easily.
  • With Lemon Juice:

    1. Similar to the vinegar method, combine 1 cup of water with 1 tablespoon of lemon juice (or a cut lemon half or two).
    2. Microwave for 2-5 minutes until steaming.
    3. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes with the door closed.
    4. Wipe clean with a damp cloth. This method also leaves a fresh, citrusy scent.
  • With Baking Soda:

    1. Mix 2 tablespoons of baking soda in 1 cup of water in a microwave-safe bowl.
    2. Heat for 2-5 minutes until it steams or boils.
    3. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes.
    4. Wipe down the interior with a soft cloth. Baking soda also helps deodorize.
  • With Dish Soap:

    1. Fill a microwave-safe bowl with 1 cup of water and a few drops (about 1 teaspoon) of mild dish soap.
    2. Microwave for 2-3 minutes to create steam.
    3. Let it sit for 3 minutes before opening.
    4. Wipe down the interior with paper towels or a damp cloth.

For Stubborn Stains and Odors:

  • Baking Soda Paste: For particularly tough, caked-on food, make a paste with baking soda and a small amount of water. Apply it directly to the stain, let it sit for 5 minutes, then gently scrub with a non-scratch sponge or cloth.
  • Deodorizing Overnight: If a lingering smell remains, place an open box or bowl of baking soda or coffee grounds in the microwave overnight to absorb odors.
  • Rubbing Alcohol (for disinfecting): For disinfecting surfaces, use a cloth soaked in 1/4 cup of rubbing alcohol.

Cleaning the Turntable and Exterior:

  • Turntable: Remove the glass turntable and wash it separately with warm, soapy water in your sink. Most are dishwasher-safe; check your microwave manual.
  • Turntable Support Ring: Don't forget to clean the plastic ring that the turntable sits on, as food can accumulate there.
  • Exterior: Wipe down the exterior of your microwave, including the door, handle, and control panel, with a damp cloth and mild dish soap. For stainless steel, wipe in the direction of the grain.
  • Cracks and Crevices: Use a soft toothbrush or cotton swab to gently clean any food that has made its way into cracks or around buttons.

Prevention is Key:

  • Cover your food: Always use a microwave-safe lid, paper towel, or plastic wrap to cover food when heating to prevent splatters.
  • Wipe spills immediately: Address spills as soon as they happen, before they dry and harden.
  • Regular light cleaning: Give your microwave a quick wipe down after cooking steamy foods, or at least once a week, to prevent grime buildup.

By following these tips, you can keep your microwave clean and smelling fresh with minimal effort!
